Eye Care Outreach in Nakaseke District
Nakaseke District is a predominantly rural district characterized by a sparse population, long travel distances between communities, and limited access to specialized eye care services. The majority of the population are cattle keepers whose livelihoods often make it difficult to seek timely medical attention. Many residents are also active members of born-again Christian communities, where Bible reading and the use of mobile phones for communication and spiritual messages are an important part of daily life. Good vision is therefore essential for both their livelihoods and quality of life.
Recognizing these unique community needs, The Seeing Eyes implemented community-based eye care outreach programmes through strategic partnerships with local health facilities, schools, churches, and marketplaces, bringing essential services closer to the people.
Key partnerships were established with Nakiwogo Hospital, Ngoma Health Centre IV, and Kinyogoga Health Centre III, alongside community leaders and faith-based organizations. Outreach activities provided comprehensive eye examinations, treatment for common eye conditions, health education, spectacle dispensing, and referral of patients requiring specialized medical or surgical care.
By delivering services within communities, many people who would otherwise have been unable to access eye care received timely treatment. Individuals living with avoidable blindness had their sight restored through appropriate interventions, enabling them to return to productive lives, read their Bibles, communicate through their mobile phones, and actively participate in their families and communities.
These initiatives reflect the vision of The Seeing Eyes—to eliminate avoidable blindness by ensuring that quality, accessible, and compassionate eye care reaches every person, regardless of where they live
