Eye Care Outreach for Blind Students in Wakiso District

Wakiso District is unique and dynamic, with a rapidly growing population distributed across numerous trading centres and peri-urban communities. This diversity calls for innovative and community-based approaches to eye care service delivery.

Our eye care outreach programmes are conducted through churches, mosques, workplaces, universities, and school vision screening programmes. Community mobilization and health education are further strengthened through collaboration with local leaders, social media campaigns, newspapers, radio announcements, and interactive radio talk shows, ensuring that eye health information reaches people where they live and work.

Over the years, we have learned that quality eye care is built on teamwork and strong partnerships. We have therefore established collaborations with Entebbe Central Clinic, The Seeing Eyes, the National Intervention on Uncorrected Refractive Errors (NIURE) at Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital, Lions Club of Entebbe and other Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Mengo Hospital Eye Unit, Mulago National Referral Hospital, China-Uganda Friendship Hospital Naguru, the Association of Uganda Opticians, the Ophthalmological Society of Uganda, and the Uganda Optometrists Association.

In addition, we have embraced teleophthalmology, enabling patients to receive consultations, examinations, treatment advice, referrals, and follow-up care through digital technologies. This innovation has expanded access to specialist eye care, especially for underserved communities.

Together with our partners and communities, we remain steadfast and unstoppable in the fight against preventable blindness. Our commitment is to ensure that every person has the opportunity to enjoy the gift of sight and a better quality of life.If this is for a grant proposal, annual report, or PhD thesis, I can also make it more academic and evidence-based.
